Costume&Makeup
Through the process of producing our trailer "ConSealed" costume and makeup plays a prominent role within this, as our sub-genre is Slasher. Before the commencing of our trailer, we will need to plan how each character will appear unto our intended audience. Which will be further developed through the usage of props, in order to maintain an engaged audience and explore realism and believability as much as possible, recognizing that a minority of props will be used by the antagonist. Nonetheless, a profile will be created for each character to provide the audience with a better understanding of their specific roles played within our trailer. The social medium of YouTube will be used to inspire and influence our choices of horrific makeup , suggesting that a range of tutorials will be watched and then adapted or imitated on one of the cast members.
Real media texts and inspirations
This poster is inspiring, consequently to it's simplicity of makeup. It highlights the realism of the protagonist being youthful and vulnerable, which relates to our antagonist, explaining her logic for surgical fixture.
|
The makeup of fake blood is prominent here, as its saturated mainly on the metallic part of the axe, making the iconic prop the focal point, which will be considered in our trailer regarding the injection syringe.
|
The poster connotes a theme of brutality which is depicted through the makeup on the main images face and through the fake blood on the chainsaw, highlighting both features to being highly inspiriting due to the dual focal points.
|
The mixture of props and makeup really enhances this poster. The prop being the crosses of blood on the horses face is highly eye catching, especially with it appearing as actual blood saturating the bath.

In the film Goodnight Mommy (2015) we liked the ideology of the protagonist being wrapped up like a greek mommy, to symbolise the surgical aspect of our trailer. This did not necessarily have to be our protagonist's face, however the concept of a bandage could be applied to an arm or another body part, signifying the healing process or a sense of complete surgical destruction.
|
|
In the film Carrie (2013) we really admired the blood being on Carrie's face, and would potentially replicate this on our protagonist, however we may likely tone down the amount of it on Jessie's (protagonist) face. The blood dripping from Carrie's face unto her body emphasises the realistic aspect, therefore if we use this make-up inspiration we will consider the same technique. |
Tutorials
I plan on replicating this look onto the protagonist, as she is scared due to the surgeon (antagonist) gaining revenge and destroying her face mainly, and also body.
|
This look could potentially be on either the stock character Maria who is already captured by the antagonist or on the protagonist. The first look in the top left hand corner is more ideal for our concept.
|
This wound would be ideal to be replicated on the protagonist, as she is more prominent throughout the trailer, therefore enhancing the amount of wounds on her body would be reasonable, as opposed to the stock character Maria.
This tutorial really inspired my stylistic aspect of distressing the t-shirt, as I don't wish it to look unrealistic with major cuts made, as it highlights the tools of which to use to create different sized wholes .
|
The wound on the hand has great potential to be imitated on both the protagonist and stock character Maria, as it highlights the brutality of what they have both been put through.
This tutorial was more in depth regarding the application of blood upon the distressed t-shirt in which I wish to rpelicate, and the dirty elements of it, as the t-shirt was rubbed upon the floor to promote the realistic appearance of the shirt.

The Cast
Main characters
Character profileJessie Allan is the protagonist seeking surgical assistance from her best friends father, who is known to be the antagonist. Her physical insecurities have stemmed from her dream of being an aspirational model, however she previously has an important casting, in which she gets rejected consequently to her face being too fat and round whilst her body does not fit the expectations as she is not slim enough.
|
Costume Analysis
Jessie and Maria's costume is pretty much the same in the enablement of conveying that they are in similar circumstances, both being victims of human traffiking. Jessie's costume depicsts a white distressed t-shirt with blood saturated all over it consequently to a very destructive surgery. Whilst her hair is messy, and her feet are bare.
played by Callum Bagshaw

Dr. Schwarzkopf
Character profileDr. Schwarzkopf is the antagonist who explores a theme of revenge within the trailer, as the protagonist Jessie is held responsible for the death of his daughter who is also Jessie's best friend. Furthermore, the plot twist relies on Dr. Schwazkopf imposing the trafficking element upon all his clients that come to him seeking surgical assistance. |
Costume Analysis
Dr. Schwarzkopf wears a white lab coat, black trousers and black trainers. Highlighting a fake immitation of an actual Dr. mainly denoted through the trainers as professional Dr's do not wear this sort of foot wear. The mood board reveals a cliche replication of an acutal Dr but also it's simplicity.
Stock Characters
Maria is a young, spoiled child who grew up living an affluent lifestyle. Her father spoils her the most, and she gets anything she aspires or has interest an in. As a young teenager, she's always aspired to have bigger lips and bigger breasts, hence why she goes to Dr. Schwarzkopf to create this visualisation, but goes tragically wrong. As she ends up being one of many victims, captured for the trafficking industry. |
Costume Analysis
Maria's costume is highly simplistic, wearing a dirty white distressed t-shirt, with deep cuts in them, therfore her black shorts are worn only to not expose too much of her skin and keeping it as modest as possible. The mood board reveals a grunge and distressed theme, highighted through the dark background and the exmaple image of Maria being in black and white. Nonetheless, tihis image highlights symbols of her captured traffiking state of circmstance through her messy hair.
Character ProfileMadeleine is Dr. Schwarzkopf's daughter, who is killed by a vehicle as Jessie and her part-take in the attempt of shop lifting, resulting in running away from the security guard. As a cause to this, Jessie leaves Madeleine and runs to her modelling consultation, whilst Madeleine runs across the road and gets hit by a moving vehicle. |
Costume Analysis
Madeleine's costume is fairly casual, denoting a black dress, leather jacket, tights and black ugg boots. This depicts a naive and sterotypical teenager, hence the theme of blackness. Nonetheless, the casual wear enhances a day-to-day look.
Experiments
In order to enable a realistic visionary of the actual outcome of the characters, I had to practice what I was going to do for the day of filming. This promoted the likelihood of the make-up being ideal for my main character Jessie and my stock character Maria. Consequently to this make-up trial, I was allocated the responsibility of purchasing the makeup consisting of fake blood, liquid latex, tissue, scissors, blowdryer, makeup sponges, tweezers, wipes and eyeshadow.
Step 1: Get tissue, carefully split the tissue layer apart to get it thinner (do this for at least 5 sheets).
Step 2: Apply liquid latex onto the arm with a sponge. Step 3: Apply one sheet of tissue onto the latex smoothly and evenly. Step 4: Use the blow dryer to dry the latex, then rip excess tissue of the edges Step 5. Apply liquid latex on top of dry layer of tissue, then add tissue on top (repeat this step at least 5 times to create a thick layer overall, make sure you blow dry in between each layer of application) Step 6: Apply foundation all over the tissue to blend in with the skin. Step 7: Use purple eye shadows around the perimeter of the tissue to create a bruised effect. Step 8: Use a tweezer first to cut open the tissue layer, when done, then use a pair of scissors to create a longer cut through this layer. Step 9: Fill the wound in with purple eye shadows first to create a base. Step 10: Then apply an excessive amount fake blood in the wound and let it drip. |
This video is a tutorial of how I achieved this simple wounded look.
DIY DISTRESSED T-SHIRTS
These images illustrate the clothing of the protagonist Jessie and the stock character Maria. Highlighting it's simplicity of being rugged and saturated in blood. This further demonstrates the similarity of their costumes, as they are both victims of human trafficking and surgical destruction, therefore we felt it would be useful for them to look the same.
My own tutorial
This video illustrates a quick tutorial of myself cutting the stock character Maria's top, in which this process was the same when doing so for the protagonist Jessie.
Evaluation
The costume of each character was successful, mainly due to it's simplicity. For instance, the protagonist and the stock character Maria only had to purchase a white top, as that was their only piece of clothing with some shorts hidden underneath, consequently to not exposing them too much as the top would be cut with splatters of blood all over. The antagonist's costume was more developed, however it was cost friendly, as most things could be borrowed from the science lab, i.e lab coat, syringe , gloves, test tubes etc... Whilst the rest was considerably casual, as Callum already had black trousers and black trainers. Furthermore, the opposing stock character Madeleine, was wearing casual black wear to symbolise a day-to-day look.
Make-up only applied to the main character Jessie (protagonist) and the stock character Maria, although the antagonist had blood splattered all over his lab coat. The replication of bruises and wounds went very well with their characters, as they had both been captured by Dr. Schwarzkopf and wrecked through surgical destruction leaving them wounded and disfigured. Creating these wounds and bruises were fairly easy and simplistic, highlighting a good time management when actually doing it on the day of filming.
Overall, make-up and costume was highly successful, as this didn't result in a high spend of money due the majority of elements not needing to be purchased as the cast already had them. However, liquid latex was a prominent use of make-up for the realism of wounds and was quite messy due to it being liquid, therefore it ran everywhere if wasn't careful, resulting in stained clothing.
