A mood board is an arrangement of images, materials, pieces of text, etc. intended to evoke a particular style or concept. This section of pre-production is created to have a visual element of our ideas and different elements that will be included within our trailer. These may not be the specific items or images that will be involved but they are developed to symbolise our key ideas regarding the production of our trailer.
Our Sub-genre: Slasher
As a group we have identified our sub-genre as Slasher. The reason for this is purely on the basis of our antagonist, as he has an iconic weapon which happens to be a needle. Enabling him to perform a variety of cosmetic surgeries on his victims. This mood board consists of many mainstream slasher films within the last century. Within every slasher film, the antagonist has an iconic weapon, therefore as a group we felt that this was essential element required in order to portray a believable slasher film.
Top slasher movies are: Halloween (1978) Black Christmas (1974) A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) Alice, Sweet Alice (1976) Peeping Tom (1960) |
Our influences
One of our main influences is a foreign movie named 'Good night mommy'. The reason why this is one of our key influences is because the antagonist has a surgery, not allowing her children to recognise her identity upon her arrival of after the surgery. The surgery alters the antagonist as a person, as this is how it complies with our trailer, as when our protagonist makes the mistake of under-going surgery , she loses all types of confidence and just wanted to get away from the world. Within all horror movies there is a connection between the antagonist and the protagonist. Goodnight Mommy includes the relation between the antagonist and the protagonist and happen to be that they are mother and son. Intensifying the dominant theme of revenge. Whereas within our trailer, the protagonist is the best friend of the antagonists deceased daughter, highlighting the reasoning for this theme of revenge within our trailer. |
Mise-en-Scene
NVCWithin this mood board the section of mise-en-scene that was explores is the different variety of NVC - Facial expressions and gestures that will be used throughout our trailer. These images depict many depressed, angry and upset facial expressions from both males and females as throughout the duration of our trailer the emotions go from happy and excited to mentally, emotionally and physically damaged as the story line is exposed. One of the main facial expressions on this board is the blank expression as within many situations our protagonist is unaware of how she should actually react to the events that partake in her life.

LOCATIONWithin this mood board I selected all the different locations that will be featured in our trailer. The reason for this is to have a visual preview of how we would like each location to look. This consist of the destroyed basement that the protagonist is kept hostage. The exterior of the house where the basement is does not reflect on how disturbingly disgusting the house actually looks. I decided on that idea because the antagonist needed a specific way to lure his victims into his trap and that was by the enticing exterior of his home. The mood board also includes the motel room that the protagonist is in when she thought her life was going to get better but it just turns upside down.
|
LIGHTINGThis mood board consist of the different types of lighting, that as a group we would like to be seen, throughout the trailer. We felt that the lighting needed to be dark to create a mysterious atmosphere for the characters and the audience. We came to a conclusion that in a part of the trailer the light needs to be bright as that is when the disequilibrium happens, with the scene that the protagonists life is ruined.

COSTUMEThis mood board consist of different outfits that our protagonist and antagonist would wear on a day to day basis. These outfits reflects them as a person and allows the audience to create their own opinion on the two key people in our trailer. My perception of the female protagonist is that she is up to date with the latest trends within society proving that's what she lives for hence her reasoning for her 'surgery'.
On the other hand the creation of this evil doctor is that he deceives people with his seen to be 'normal' stereotypical appearance of an old experienced surgical doctor. This also shows he still has a sense of professionalism within his animalistic behaviour throughout the trailer. |
Our Antagonist
This mood board is all about our antagonist and what we envision him to look like an his key props. Our antagonist is a Russian doctor that gains pleasure ruining young beautiful female faces who have the dream to become a model. This is because his only daughter was killed because of who he thinks was her best friend (our protagonist). The doctors iconic weapon is located in the center of the mood board, which is a syringe/needle. The reason for this iconic weapon is that the substance within the needle makes all his patients numb and allows him to do all his evil surgeries on them without them stopping him in the process. This doctor is different from all others as instead of wearing white or blue gloves he only wears BLACK!

Our Protagonist
Our protagonist is the typical girl who is in love with make up, beauty pageants and has the aspiration to become a model. She is self involved in her looks and wants to look 'perfect' hence the reason for her urge to have the surgery with who is unaware is our antagonist. She is a leading winner for the past 5 years of all the competitions she has entered and becomes hurt broken when she isn't entered into the biggest competition of the year and wants to make her face 'perfect' so that she can re-apply the following year, which only leads her to the darkest place in her life because she doesn't have the funds to pay private surgeon. We decided that we didn't want our protagonist to have blonde hair only because she isn't the typical uneducated beauty Queen so we thought it would be better that she was a brunette to subvert the stereotype. The reason for the makeup brands being involved in the mood board is because those are the two brands that she has dreamt to pursue a modelling career with.
My original mood board has lead me to be inspired to create a potential outcome of how my protagonist wil look, enhacning the simplicity of her clothing, however I intend on implementing a more cosmetic aspect on it, regarding the makeup.

OVERALL
Overall this board consist of the locations, lighting, influences, our protagonist & antagonist, costumes of the key characters with there iconic weapons and last but not least the NVCS of our trailers. We are hoping that with all these items this will create the ideal horror trailer and portray all that we have planned.
My Art work
I created this piece of artwork to depict the different ideas that as a group we had for the design of our film Title. Although halfway through creating this piece of art i realised that I was spelling the title wrong i still thought it would be ideal to put it up as it shows the idea within it self even though the spelling is wrong. We decided to include the iconic weapon into the title to substitute the letter 'L' as that was one unique idea that we haven't seen being used throughout the horror genre.
The second idea was generated from our film influence of 'Goodnight Mommy' as throughout majority of the film the antagonist kept her face wrapped up. I felt it connotes the protagonists emotions after under going surgery which resulted to her losing her confidence. |
As the iconic weapon is a significant element within our trailer allowing the audiences to identify our trailer as a slasher I felt the need to put my non-artistic talent to use and draw the weapon itself. The different colour splashes connotes the different emotions within the trailer. This was important to me as not many emotions are actually acknowledge throughout the production stages with deep meaning but are only acknowledge afterwards.
